Electrical problems rarely announce themselves clearly. Most of the time, there are small warning signs well before anything fails outright. If you manage a rented or commercial property, knowing what to look for can save you an emergency call-out later.
Lights that flicker or dim for no obvious reason are one of the most common early signs of a loose connection or an overloaded circuit. It is easy to dismiss as a cheap bulb, but if it keeps happening across different fittings, it is worth having an electrician take a look.
Warm or discoloured sockets and switches are never normal. If a socket feels warm to the touch, or you notice scorch marks around a switch plate, stop using it and get it checked straightaway.
A fuse box that trips repeatedly is telling you something is wrong downstream, not just being oversensitive. Persistent tripping usually points to a fault in the wiring or an appliance drawing too much current.
A burning smell with no clear source is one of the more serious signs and should never wait. Turn off the supply at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and call an electrician immediately.
If the property has not had an Electrical Installation Condition Report in the last five years, that alone is a reason to book one. For rented properties in England, landlords are legally required to have this done at least every five years by a qualified electrician.
MH Prime works with NICEIC qualified electricians for everything from a single flickering light to a full property inspection and certificate. Because we manage the booking end to end, you get one point of contact rather than chasing an electrician’s diary yourself.
If any of this sounds familiar, get in touch and we will get someone out to take a look.
